High School Musical  Touted as a retelling of Romeo and Juliet, Disney phenomenon High School Musical is more akin to Grease than the Bard’s tragedy. It is, however, more wholesome and has a more positive message than its leather and spandex predecessor. High School Musical is about popular cliques at school stepping outside of their exclusive circles and trying new things. High School Musical is a wonderful film that shows children of all ages that it is okay to challenge the status quo. Troy Bolton, captain of East High’s basketball team, wants to perform in the winter musical, as does whiz kid Gabriella Montez. Troy’s best friend, Chad Danforth, thinks the musical will interfere with their game, and Gabriella’s decathlon teammate Taylor McKessie doesn’t want Gabriella distracted, either. But friends always stand by friends, so in the end Chad and Taylor do what they can to support the song struck lovebirds and prevent the conniving sibling duo Sharpay and Ryan Evans from winning the audition.
When High School Musical debuted on the Disney Channel, more than 6 million viewers tuned in.
